Crystal's Travel Fail (as always) [27 May 2009|12:33pm]
[ mood | sleepy ]

So I have this terrible, TERRIBLE relationship with traveling, but every time I go somewhere, it ends up working out okay, and I learn something new. So I guess we'll tell the story first and reveal the moral at the end.

Soooooooooo... as some of you may (or may not) know, I stayed back in Cornell to work in my dorm's office to work over graduation - checking parents in/out and dealing with their questions as we became a make-shift hotel. X__x

I was scheduled to leave on Tuesday at 6pm: my flight plan?
Ithaca 6pm -> Philly 7pm
Philly 8:30 -> Las Vegas 11pm
Las Vegas 8AM (Wednesday Morning, yeah) -> SLC 9am.

So... my first mistake was panicking about all the boxes that I had to have stored so that I was left with only one suitcase of stuff to take on the plane. I can't carry all the boxes by myself (no car and such) so I had to arrange an appointment with the storage company to pick them up. So, stupid Crystal scheduled the company to pick up the boxes on Monday evening... ... I leave Tuesday evening... I still needed to sleep Monday night... but I need to store my sheets/pillows/blankets cuz they're huge and I can't fit them in my suitcase and I can't take 'em on the plane...
So I ended up sleeping Monday night on an empty mattress in my hoodie and I woke up freeeeeeeezing.
(so there's Fail #1)

So Tuesday, I prep my room to leave, and I planned on checking out of my room at around 3-3:30 so I could catch a bus (which costs $1.50 on weekdays) at 3:50 (at a stop about 5 minutes walk [without luggage] away). So I have plenty of time, right? If everything went as planned, I'd get to the bus stop at 3:40-3:45ish, no problems.

Well, my room checkout took longer than I expected because my boss checked out my room (for damages) and we ended up just chatting a bunch throughout. So it was already about 3:40 when I turned in my keys. No biggie, I can still get to the bus stop in time, right?

Well sometime during the checkout process, I realized I should probably check how much cash I have... 86¢ total. (There's Fail #2!) Not enough for the bus ride, or anything else, really. So I tried trucking my way over to the community center about a block's distance(ish) down from my dorm where they have an ATM. Closed - the doors were locked and I couldn't get in to access the ATM. Well, by this point, I've missed the bus, but another one was coming in 30min as long as I could get the money for it... The next closest ATM that I was SURE would be open... Collegetown... about... 3 blocks down? All UPHILL. WITH MY 45-POUND SUITCASE. IN THE RAIN (and I had put my umbrella in storage...)

So after about 10+ minutes of hauling my butt and my luggage up hill and a set of stairs, I got to the ATM, and decided, you know what? screw the bus - I hadn't really had anything to eat all day except for two leftover wings from the night before and I wanted something to eat and drink. So I called a taxi to come pick me up from CollegeTown Bagels (CTB) in about half an hour.

CTB, mind you, is a store down from the ATM and right outside that ATM is another bus stop. So I'm eating a plain bagel pizza and staring out the window waiting for the taxi, when I see the bus that I would've (and could've now since I have cash) gotten on, pass by. (Oh well, Fail #3).

At about 35 minutes after the taxi driver -said- they'd be there, I got a call from him saying he'd be a little late (at this point, it's about 4:55). I was like, okay... whatever, Ithaca has a small airport, if I'm there a little less than an hour before we takeoff, I'm still fine...

Eventually, the taxi came, and we got to the airport at around 5:30pm. My flight was supposed to leave at 6 - and there's a line to check in. Crap.

But I hear everyone talking about how the rain is delaying flights, and sure enough the two flights leaving from our dinky airport were both delayed. So when I went to check in, the lady said, "oooh, flying to Salt Lake? You probably won't make it tonight" and then I mentioned, "well i have some place I can stay in Philly, can you change my flight plan so I stay overnight there instead of here?" and she quickly found a direct flight from Philly -> SLC that left the next morning.

So I got a free visit to my sister which ended up with me having a pillow and a blanket to sleep in for the night instead of spending the night in an uncomfy airport chair and no one to talk to/nothing to do! And the direct flight thing was a bonus.

If I had gotten to the airport earlier than I did, I might not have known about the delay until later, so then my flight plan change might've not happened until I was in Philly and everything probably would've been a lot more confusing...

So.. All in all, I think me missing the bus, having lunch, and the taxi being late all ended up getting me a better travel deal in the end.

So... two morals...

1. ALWAYS KEEP TABS ON HOW MUCH CASH YOU HAVE A FEW DAYS BEFORE TRAVELING. >_< not 30 minutes before...
2. Inconveniences can sometimes be... very convenient. I'm glad I got lunch yesterday, I'm glad I got to see my sister, and I'm glad I had one less layover!

Either way, I'm back home in UT, seeking employment. x3

Screw Daylight Savings... [09 Mar 2009|02:43pm]
[ mood | sleepy ]

So my cell phone is my alarm clock, right? And of course technology nowadays self-adjusts itself to compensate for Daylight Savings beginning and ending... right? Well it turns out my cell phone adjusted the ALARM to go off at the equivalent time from before... as in... it should have gone of at 10:20am... it went off at 11:20 am. I missed a quiz in my mandatory Japanese Section...

On death... [11 Jan 2009|09:06am]
[ mood | sad ]

So, since I have nothing to do and this is rather... important, I guess I'll post a bit.

Cai Cai is dying. ;-; He can't drink (he'll try for 10 minutes and the water level will not drop and it will just be dirty with food particles and slobber afterwards) so he has to eat snow. He can't eat anything hard because he can't chew it. He can't eat too much at a time or else his throat gets blocked and he has to cough it all up. He used to liked Kix a lot until I gave him a bowl that he ate too quickly and he had to cough up a few chunks. Now he won't eat it anymore. He likes lunch meat because it's thin and soft, but he pretty much requires that someone feed him all day - just little bits all day. He's like a grazing cow now... but on lunch meat and cheese (and formerly Kix). He's also having a hard time breathing. He seems to have a tumor in his throat which is probably making is throat passages really small, so he's always panting and always snoring. His throat problem is also making his once-menacing bark into a raspy quack.

Worst of all is that his five senses are pretty much failing him (with the exceptions being touch and maybe taste). He went blind in his left eye while I was gone for fall semester due to a tumor in his brain - the eye looked pretty normal except for an enlarged pupil that took up 80% of the eye's area. After Charm left on the 5th, his eyesight in his right eye has been getting worse and worse - he's pretty much completely blind now. He's run into a lot of walls, people, furniture, and even today on a walk, we crossed the street and he tripped on the curb. It was pretty funny to watch him run into walls the first couple of times, but it's become so frequent that it's really sad... he'll just slowly amble into a wall and then look around and bark for help.
His hearing is almost there, but he's unable to pinpoint the location that the sounds originate from. I was standing directly in front of him (though a little further away) and told him to come to me... He turned left and ran into a doorframe. Of course, he was a little dazed and confused so he just stood there... I told him to come again and the same thing happened. When he hears someone go down the stairs from my room, he starts walking towards my bookshelf (the opposite direction). And he just stands there confused and dazed (again) and he starts barking his raspy bark to try and get us to help him. I think it's safe to say that it's a problem with the hearing in the right ear because he's always trying to follow sounds by going to the left...
He can't smell really well anymore either so this means he can't find food. You have to hand feed him and actually touch the food to his nose for him to know it's there. Just dangling it in front of his face does nothing - he doesn't start drooling or try and stare at it because he can't see it or smell it: he doesn't know it's there unless you touch it to him.
He can still feel at least, so he knows when he's run into something and that's the only way we can lead him around or feed him... I think he can still taste because he still has an affinity for meat, but it's a little hard to tell.

I leave on Friday so after that he'll be really lonely with Mom and Dad going to work every day. So Dad said we're going to put him down on Wednesday and have him cremated... He would have been 11 years old in April.

[ music | Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch - Ever Blue ]

So... new layout. 'Cuz that's all I ever do with my livejournal nowadays, really. u__u;;

So this one features Hanon from Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch since I've started watching the show recently (since I have nothing else to do) and of the mermaids that have been introduced, she's my favorite (even though she still gets on my nerves sometimes when she goes into her "TARO-CHAAAN" fantasies. ^^;;;; Maybe I'm just shallow 'cuz I think she's the prettiest in all the forms. (I really don't like Green's long idol dress... u__u;; ).

The show itself... both amuses me and drives me insane. I hate how they spend like 3+ minutes in every episode with practically the saaame song. u___u;; I mean, sure they mix up who gets which parts now and then, but it really sounds all the same to me... Also, the main villains continually bickering over who gets to capture what is really annoying and, again, I feel like time's a-wastin' in the episode when they do that (I just mostly skip over it, but still...) Also, the general concept of defeating an enemy by singing to them is still a little silly in my mind, but I guess it's kind of interesting with the power of music... .__.;;; What's keeping me watching the show (other than the fact that I have nothing better to do) is the cute romantic parts between Kaito and Lucia and my curiosity as to who exactly the main villain is...

Either way, this was a rather strange layout for me to make, I had no idea what I was doing with this picture since I feel like its rather hard to find nice, good quality MMPPP pictures... *sad* But I think it turned out quite well... "Ever Blue" is the name of Hanon's first image song, so I figured I'd be unoriginal and name the layout that.

So... new things... I have a job now! That's a first. I'm working in my dorm's office doing some regular office work, but my main job is to make posters and stuff for them. I made my first poster in, like, the last 20 minutes of my shift yesterday, and apparently my employer (and her higher-up, too) was quite impressed with the quality and the speed of my work. :D (though they want me to use publisher and so I can't do that many things in photoshop (especially since the work computer only has Photoshop 5.5) and so there's definitely more I could be doing these posters but... oh well.)

Also, I've been doing bucketloads of more photoshop work including making logos for friends' student organizations (we'll see if they accept it, though), pictures for my own fun, posters for school-wide concert events (we'll see if they accept it, though).... I think I've finally gotten out of my artist's block.

I'm really sleepy now because Dave/Shenlong/Timur has gotten me and Kevin addicted to Ragnarok Online.. @__@ I'm actually surprised I'm in class today, but we had a problem set due, so... of course, I had to be here to turn it in.

Anyway, class... I guess I should pay attention. :3

So... the past couple days have been a disaster... Kevin and I were supposed to go skiing the day before yesterday, but I came down with a horrible stomachache accompanied by fever, dizziness, nausea, and all sorts of unpleasantness... So I ended up making Kevin waste, like, $30 on renting skiis the night before. T__T Yesterday, I went to the doctor's yesterday where they gave me some nausea medicine because I was throwing up all the night before. But then I ended up sleeping through all of yesterday... @__@ We might be able to go skiing tomorrow, but, I don't know... and then, of course, I leave on Sunday, so I won't be able to hang out with anyone, I'm pretty sure, until summer... I'm still rather dizzy and tired, and my stomach still kind of hurts, so today's not good for hanging out...

Sorry, guys...

Brand New Year: Start Me Up! [01 Jan 2008|07:23pm]
[ mood | awake ]
[ music | One Piece - Brand New World ]

So, the past week has been interesting... I'm not sure when the last time I updated was, but... both a lot has happened, and yet it seems like not much has happened at all.

Last Saturday, Mommy took me and Charm to a day spa... it feels so nice getting pampered, but it was pretty expensive, so definitely not something I should get used to... ^^;

Yesterday was the most hectic day I've had in a while...

First, we went skiing after 3 so that we could go for free... it was pretty nice. Even though it was really cold, the powder was amazing as usual. X3
Afterwards, though, we had to go back home and prepare for a dinner party at some asian lady's house (one of mom's friends). But earlier that day, Skuld-oneechan had called and wanted to hang out before her root canal on Wednesday. So Charm arranged that we could have a sleepover with her after the dinner party... So, at around 6, we get home, and we have about an hour to get ready for the dinner party...
At the dinner party, there were a lot of people, mostly old Chinese people who I have a hard time telling if they're trying to talk to me or not... X__x and then I don't speak chinese that well, so trying to respond was rather painful... but then, at around 8:10, I get a call from Sam who tells me there's a 'shindig' at Danielle's house, who I realized lives about a block or two away. So I got permission from my family and drove over to her house for about an hour before I had to drive back to the house-of-Asians to pick up Charm and back home in time to greet Skuld.

Skuld coming over was a total blast. We played a lot of Set and Fluxx (yeah, we're geeky, but it's fun like that). But because of her toothache (which is why she's getting the root canal) she needed her pain medications, but she forgot them at home... so Charm offered her some of her prescription painkillers which was described to her as "glorified Advil" by her doctor. Since Skuld's not allergic to Advil or anything like that, we didn't think it'd be a problem and she took a pill before we continued playing games. A few games later, though, she started noticing that she was really itchy all over and her voice was getting hoarse and she had a kind of sore throat... we looked online, and apparently, she was experiencing many of symptoms that occur if you're allergic to the medicine Charm gave to her... OOPS. Before we went to bed, we found that she had broken out all over her body in hives even though the itching was gone. Well, at least she was perfectly fine when she woke up this morning, but... I guess this is why they tell you not to take other people's prescription meds. ^^;;;

Either way, Happy New Year to you all~!

This year... was filled with a lot of change... that is, with my grades (getting better!) and me actually taking action to change schools...

Well, it's a new year... in a few weeks will be a new semester... hopefully I'll be in a new school with new ideas of what I want to do!

New Gurren Lagann Layout! [29 Dec 2007|12:41am]
[ mood | accomplished ]

Following my current Gurren Lagann obsession... after hunting around for adequate screenshots, I have finally (well, not really considering I only thought of making a Gurren Lagann Layout maybe a week ago...) made this layout. It features a cute picture of Nia and Simon and the text, though usually not something I would use for the kind of background I put behind the picture, works as a Nia-like font. It... makes sense if you see the series. Anyway, the title, Happily Ever After is also a title of one of the image songs from the series and the lyrics floating in the background are from this song as well.
Working on Nia-themed icons currently, they'll be up sooner or later, depending on when I decide to go to sleep.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Review [24 Dec 2007|01:06am]
[ music | Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Happily Ever After ]

So... Still not sure if this Anime replaces One Piece as my favorite... viewing-pleasure wise, it's about the same as One Piece, to me, and the fact that it's rather short without a horrible-truncated ending (like, it doesn't end just to have an ending...) is an added bonus, so, it probably does. Though I don't know if the shortness counts in the criteria for such things... since being short has it's ups and downs.

The fact that it's short makes it so that it doesn't drag ON and ON like Naruto does... Things that happen just happen and end usually within an episode (though that's not saying there aren't cliffhangers). Also, though, it means that fight scenes aren't the same animation over and over again (like Naruto is) with really bad-quality-repeated-motions. So basically, the fight scenes are good, well-animated, and not longer than they need to be.

The story itself is interesting and has some intriguing themes... It's well told, I think, keeping you wondering about why certain events occur and such. It's also not unrealistic and optimistic in its promises and whatever. The characters in this story are amazing - you manage to get attached to all of them, even the side characters that only appear once in a while (or maybe that's just me being sappy).
It does get a little trippy near the end... but despite an initial unsatisfied feeling after the ending... I realized that the ending was probably the best they could have possibly come up with while keeping everyone in character and stuff - I just wish we could've seen more of everyone's lives after everything is said and done.

Emotionally, Gurren Lagann holds a good mix of humor and seriousness... Humor consists both of silly innuendos and off-the-wall, blindly-confident characters (Kamina) that actually remind me a lot of Luffy sometimes.

My favorite part, I think, is probably the soundtrack... there are some really strange songs in there, but they all fit the mood of the anime very well. It's an enjoyable soundtrack both while watching the anime and just listening to the music alone...

Overall, it's an amazing, short anime that's good to keep you laughing and crying and is great to watch with friends. Just don't think about the events TOO much, and you'll be okay.

Powder! [21 Dec 2007|09:09pm]
[ mood | cheerful ]

So, I'm sick... I have been for the past few days... >__< but I went skiing today anyway. Despite the being sick, the really cold snowing wind of pain, and sore legs right now, I had a lot of fun!
:D The most hilarious part was when my cousin, Lily, tripped on some branches and fell into the powder, and since we were on a narrow path, I couldn't avoid her and tripped over HER and fell on top of her. We ended up making someone else that came by a few minutes later (yeah, we were still struggling to get out of the powder) throw himself off (or read as: "intentionally fall to the side of") the trail so he wouldn't hit us and by the time HE got up, we were still struggling. Lily and I took a good 10, 15 minutes to get out of the powder, probably... XD it was so funny... the powder was so deep, almost past knee-high. Every attempt of ours to get out, we'd end up falling back in even deeper... I might've lost a ski, but Lily stepped on it in her attempts to get out, which informed me of where it was, yay. All the meanwhile, the other guy was trying to help us get out and stuff, but there really wasn't much he could do... It didn't help that I was just laughing so hard at ourselves... I don't know why, but Lily ends up screaming, "get off of me!!" a lot whenever we're around each other.. XD

The powder was so nice, though... X3 *squee* it was so much fun, even though I got stuck in it a good 5 times or so... XD

I like my new skis and totally look forward to more skiing this season. :D

[ music | Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Sora Iro Days ]

I'm home now. It's nice not having classes, but I feel obligated to do things that I would otherwise want to take a nap... X___x

Anyway, over study break/finals, Kevin and I discovered the wonder that is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. It might actually replace One Piece as my favorite Anime (at least for the moment) since it's short, I'll see the ending by the time school starts again, and it's making me laugh and cry about as much as One Piece does... Not sure yet, but it's a pretty close call...

Lily, my cousin, is over now, and Charm comes home late tomorrow. After that, Lily leaves on the 28th or so, and Charm leaves on the 3rd of January, and then Kevin comes over on the 4th. :3

I'm pretty tired, and even though it's nice being home, I miss being in the dorms more, I think... though I'm so happy being back with Cai Cai... X3 he's so cute and silly.

So the past week's been kind of fun... in a sleep-deprived sort of way.

Tuesday was my birthday, but I had a test (CS) that day too. X__X I ended up getting an 88 on the test, despite not having gone to class for the past couple weeks (Hooray!). And when I got home, everyone (that lives in Becker, almost) came over because Kevin had bought a cookie-cake with M&Ms on it for me that had "Happy Birthday Crystal" written on it. Tiny and Paul had made me a paper cardstock kitty which is really impressive! :O

Then, yesterday, we made dinner as a whole group, Kevin and I made deviled eggs and Linguine w/ a Freshly-Made Garlic and Orange-Bell-Peppers and Tomatoes and Stuff sauce. Tiny and Paul made a delicious Cream of Mushroom Chicken with nummy mushrooms... *___* Mmmmm... And THEN, they brought dessert out after a while, and everyone sang happy birthday to me AND Kevin. It turns out they were planning a surprise party for the both of us before Kevin went and bought the cookie cake. So anyway, dessert last night was a delicious Cherry, Blackberry & Raspberry-Jello pie, and delicious Brownies, and Ryan-Raspberry bars (which were also delicious).

Thanksgiving break is soon, so I'm feeling really chilled out right now. Unfortunately that applies in a physical sense too... X___X it's getting really cold out.

Anyway, for Thanksgiving break, I'm going up to Canada to visit relatives. While I'm there, I need to remember to buy:

Nice PingPong paddles for me & Kevin
New black lace-up shoes that aren't sneakers

Layout Change [02 Nov 2007|01:40am]
[ mood | tired ]

I've decided to put up a new layout. It features Mitsuki from Full Moon wo Sagashite for a couple reasons. 1) I just finished watching Full Moon wo Sagashite a while ago (finally) and 2) because all of these icons were already all made and so I don't have to deal with making more.

as for anything else important:

  • Colbert was hilarious

  • I'm starting to finally catch up in One Piece since I'm so used to poorly-subbed things now that I can (somewhat) deal with other people subbing One Piece other than K-F... (somewhat)

  • I have a meeting with an engineering advisy-person on Tuesday to talk about transferring out of engineering... X___x

  • Course-Enroll for next semester starts Monday

  • Test on Tuesday for COGST

  • Test on Thursday for Math

  • Test on NEXT Tuesday (my birthday, of all days) for CS 211

  • and I quit CSA...

Does anyone else feel pain in their dreams, or am I just unusual?

Like - it's happened several times before, but earlier today, I was taking a nap and in part of my dream, I was being shot by a machine gun and my side tensed up and started hurting and I couldn't breathe, but I also didn't really wake up... Kevin decided that he'd learn, at least somewhat, how to cook. So using that cookbook I bought last week, we picked out a couple recipes (Lemon-Garlic Spaghetti and Beef Patties with Onions and Peppers) and decided to cook them on Sunday. We had a few problems (like a fire drill before we were done cooking... =_____=) but it turned out really well. I had to do some things like sautée the onions and peppers, the beef was a little overcooked, and we had to improvise a little to make the spaghetti more flavorful, but everything tasted really good in the end. We even gave some to Tiny and Paul who were going to go somewhere later and when someone called Tiny to say he was waiting for them, Paul continued to shove his face as quickly as possible before running out the door (lol), a very flattering compliment to a cook. :3 More than anything, though, it was fun cooking with Kevin, though a little hectic, but certainly better than cooking by myself. We've decided to make this a biweekly event. Maybe the week after this week, we'll do a combined cooking project with Tiny and Paul. :D

Also on Sunday, I made myself a new watch! I bought a watch face at a craft store since I bought some ribbons that were too short for anything but my wrists and hair (and I don't put my hair up so much anymore) and ended up (after a long and painful process) making it so that I could put the ribbons on the watch and then around my wrist! Hooray. Now I have a watch that matches pretty much every one of my outfits!

In other news:
Math HW due on Friday
BioNB test on Friday
Colbert on Friday
Into The Streets volunteering thing on Saturday
CS project due on Monday....

These next few days are going to be hectic...

Cooking +2 [14 Oct 2007|02:16am]
[ mood | cheerful ]

So, since I last posted... there was Fall Break. It was amazingly fun, I did no homework because I had none, and I made my friends curry on the Saturday of fall break.

Things to remember from cooking curry:

  • Adding more curry paste does NOT thicken the sauce, but just makes it spicier (well duh, Crystal)

  • Soysauce would probably be good to add the next time I try the same thing

  • Kevin likes the curry with peanuts in it... again, to be tried next time

  • Rice isn't that hard to cook without a rice cooker

  • Cornstarch probably should be added to make the sauce more sauce-like instead of making the curry soup-like...

Everyone said they liked the curry, but it was a bit spicy... Alex was funny about it because after his first bite he yelled, "OH MY GOSH!" and started laughing and proceeded to explain, "I love really spicy stuff - it's like a challenge to eat!" and I'm just like, "uuuh... -__- thanks?" It's was kind of amusing, but they all seemed to like it....

The Thursday after fall break, I had my CS 211 prelim - I got a 94/100. ^^v Win! I'm very pleased with my score and am really quite proud of myself. After that, Friday was a fun day since I only had two classes.

Then, today, Kevin and I went to the mall. Kevin bought me Xenosaga II (which is a little confusing as I've never played Xenosaga I or Xenogears [but we couldn't find those]), as an early anniversary present and I bought myself a neato "Three & Four Ingredient" cookbook. :3 I also bought stuff to make dinner for Kevin as an early anniversary present to him. I ended up making: 2 Rib-Eye Steaks (seasoned with pepper, garlic, and salt) with Sautéed Mushrooms and Onions (and a hint of lime), and Buttered-Dill Potatoes. Kevin really liked the steak, which made me really happy. I was a little afraid I would undercook it because I don't trust the beef from Tops as much as I probably should... but, then, I didn't want to overcook it either because then it wouldn't taste good. And since Kevin nor I have horrible stomach aches just yet, I think I did okay. I like cooking - it's especially fun when people like eating what I make.

Test Scores [04 Oct 2007|07:20pm]
[ mood | sleepy ]

So. Here's how all my scores worked out.

BIONB - 90.5/100 (don't know what the mean was)
COGST - 89/100 or 93/104* (Mean: 77 or 81)
ARKEO - 43/50 or 86/100 (Mean: 89)
MATH - 89/100 (Mean: 79)
CS - TBA (test next week, after fall break... )

My highest test score is in the class I find most interesting.... ... how does this not surprise me? Maybe I really should change schools... X___x

I've been really sleepy/dizzy today... but, I have to finish my comp sci project before tonight - bleh.

*The Prof. wanted the mean to be 81, so he's adding 4 points to everyone's score and putting it out of 104 (since the highest score would then be 104).
